Contra Dance in Princeton (Carpool from Neptune/Wall Area) Contra dancing is a little bit like square dancing, in that it uses figures like dos-a-dos and allemand, but it is done not in a square of four couples but in a line of couples. It is a called dance, but the caller usually stops after the first few rounds of the music, when the dancers have caught on to the dance. Contra dancing is very energetic and lots of fun. One of the best things about contra dancing is that the music is ALWAYS live. All dances are taught, and there are usually lots of experienced dancers to help out. (Beginners should not dance with other beginners.) We will be carpooling to Princeton from a location near Neptune and Wall, NJ. (RSVP to find out where.) We will leave PROMPTLY at 6:30 PM to get to Princeton by 7:30 -- in time for the beginner's lesson -- so get there EARLY or be missed. The dance runs through 10:30 PM, and we should get back to the meeting place by 11:30 PM. When you go to the location information below, IGNORE the map Meetup first provides, and instead click on the "tinyurl.com" web link that I give to see the correct map of the parking lot. You can enlarge this and even use the satellite image to clarify where we will be meeting. Wear light clothing. Men typically wear slacks or shorts and a T-shirt or short-sleeved dress shirt. Ladies typically wear skirt and blouse. (Hint for the ladies - spin in front of a mirror to ensure you won't show off more than you WANT to show off!) Jeans are not inappropriate, but too hot for me! If cold, dress in layers. Bring a change of clothes if you, like me, perspire heavily. I suggest you bring at least one bandanna or other cloth for mopping sweat. WEAR NO PERFUME, AFTERSHAVE OR OTHER SCENTED PRODUCTS. (They can be obnoxious to other dancers!!!) You MUST carry in a clean-soled pair of shoes for dancing. These must not mark the floor in any way (no grit, no black heel marks). Tennis shoes may be too sticky, interfering with dancing. For more than you want to know about contra dancing, visit: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contra_dance Notice that I am not running the dance -- only the carpool to the dance. There is no charge per se for carpooling, but typically riders cover the cost of gas, at least. I can carry a maximum of three riders. If more than this, we'll need another driver. You must pay the admission charge (typically $7 to $8, less for seniors and students) at the door. The dance is run by Princeton Country Dancers. You do NOT have to carpool with us to go to this dance. For further information, see: www.princetoncountrydancers.org/ Tonight's dance details: Caller: Dan Black (Bruce's rating: Good to Excellent caller) Band: Mr. Darcy (Bruce's rating: Not sure. At least one band member is very good.)
